Breakdown: Jack Bates to lead strong GRC defense

By: Casey Rutledge August 7, 2014

For the past 2 seasons, Grand Rapids Christian High’s defense has been overlooked due to the huge play making ability and offensive firepower that was their own offense. This year, the defensive side of the ball will be a loaded arsenal, and it all starts with the big dog in the middle, Jack Bates. Bates notched 96 tackles (60 solo) last season, and was a nightmare for every ball carrier in the O-K White. It’s no surprise as Bates hopes to catch the eye of West Point Academy as he has an interest in playing football at the next level for Army along the way.

Bates is as old school and disciplined as they come on the gridiron. He’s a linebacker that keeps it simple with one goal in mind—stopping the ball carrier. Bates gets downhill quickly and has exceptional block shedding ability. At 6’2 and 235 lbs., Bates stacks up with any player in the state, and may be one of the best Mike linebackers we’re going to see this year. Bates is meaner than a Copperhead snake and I can assure you, he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Christian High will have a chance to set the tone immediately with a very challenging South Christian opponent in week one. The matchup of Bates and Wassink has us licking our chops in what guarantees to be a thriller! The Eagles are poised for another run at a state title this season; expect Bates and partner-in-crime Mitch Damstra to wreak havoc all season long!
