Breakdown: Mason Dekker leads, West Ottawa defense follows

By: Sam Russell August 13, 2014

Mason Dekker has exactly what a coach is looking for in a linebacker. The West Ottawa senior is a smart, high-motor type of player who always finds a way to make a play. On top of that, Dekker is a great leader and there is no doubt the Panther defense will be looking to him in 2014.

Over the last 2 seasons, Dekker has been all over the field racking up over 200 total tackles. His tremendous play at the middle linebacker position has earned him All Conference and Honorable Mention All Conference honors the past two season. I'm excited to watch him anchor what I think will be a very solid defense in 2014.

I am a fan of the intangibles Dekker possesses. Every football coach wants smart, tough, hard working players, and that's what Mason Dekker brings to the table every single day. He plays the game with an energy and passion tough for his opponents to match.

Dekker's senior leadership will be crucial this season as the Panthers look to get back into the playoffs after falling just short in 2013 at 5-4. I don't know about you, but Mason Dekker is definitely the type of linebacker I would like leading my defense.

By the numbers:

2012: 117 tackles, O-K Red All Conference

2013: 98 tackles, O-K Red All Conference HM
