Muskegon (4-0) started the 1st
quarter hot immediately after forcing a three and out for East Grand
Rapids (2-2) on their first possession. QB Shawn Pfenning hit Joeviair
Kennedy on a 30-yard pass down the sidelines in which Kennedy made a
fantastic juggling catch, pulling the ball in with one hand. A roughing
the passer penalty tacked on 15 yards putting the Big Reds at the EGR
15. Two plays later Pfenning finished the drive with a 2-yard TD run
making it 7-0 with 9:36 left.
The
Muskegon defense remained strong on the 2nd possession forcing another
punt and once again the Big Reds were able to turn it into points. A 12
yard run by Keonte' Whiteside and then a 13-yard run by Caleb
Washington set up an Alezay Coleman 14-yard TD run making it 14-0 Big
Reds with 6:06 left in the quarter.
East
Grand Rapids was able to drive into Big Reds territory on the following
drive after a 22-yard run and a 7-yard run by Mikey Roth, but the drive
was stopped on 4th down and 6 from the Muskegon 23 after Roth's pass to
Nathan McCardell fell incomplete.
The
defenses of both teams held strong into the 2nd quarter and Muskegon
was stopped on 4th and 1 on the East Grand Rapids 6-yard line after
Shawn Pfenning's pass intended for Caleb Washington fell incomplete in
the endzone.
Defense
was king in the 2nd quarter as no team reached the endzone and the
teams headed into the half with the score still 14-0 Muskegon.
Muskegon
started the 2nd half with a 20-yard run by Washington and then later he
added a 13-yard run on 4th and 1 to extend the drive. Two plays later
Pfenning hit Alazey Coleman over the middle and Coleman went BEAST mode
shedding multiple tacklers and taking it to the house for a 45-yard TD
giving Muskegon a 21-0 lead with 8:01 left.
East
Grand Rapids responded with a TD drive of their own when Mikey Roth
stood in the pocket, took a hit, and delivered a 7-yard strike to Jon
Olsson to cut the lead to 21-7. The TD capped a 13-play 69-yard drive
by the Pioneers. Roth almost hit Banbury for a TD earlier in the drive,
but the play was broken up by Alezay Coleman, but a personal foul moved
EGR inside the Big Reds 10-yard line where they capitalized with a
score.
Muskegon
once again broke a big play on the next drive and it was Keonte'
Whiteside getting into the mix. Whiteside turned on the jets and busted
a 76-yard TD run giving Muskegon a 28-7 lead with 27 seconds left in
the 3rd.
In
the 4th, the Muskegon defense was strong keeping East Grand Rapids out
of the endzone. The Big Reds got after Pioneers' QB Mikey Roth and
pressured him all night long, registering 4 sacks on the night.
Miguel
Flores added a 31-yard field and Pfenning ran in another score from 5
yards out with less than 10 seconds to go giving Muskegon a 37-7 win.
