The
first half was filled with strong defense making it difficult for Grand
Ledge (7-4) and East Kentwood (10-1) to move the ball throughout the
first half.
After
five straight punts the teams traded back and forth over the course of
the 1st, East Kentwood got on the board first in the 2nd quarter.
Kyle
Friberg hit Tristan Waters on a fade route for 30 yards setting up the
Falcons at the Grand Ledge 17-yard line. After a screen pass to Kevin
Smith for 6 yards and a Quantayvious Totten 9-yard run, Friberg
finished the drive with a 2-yard TD on the QB sneak. The PAT was
blocked and the Falcons led 6-0 with 10:14 left in the 2nd quarter.
The
Falcons' defense continued to get quick pressure on Grand Ledge QB JT
Houghton and forced another three and out, but Comets' punter Luke
Lalumia pinned East Kentwood deep with a 59-yard punt which was downed
at the 6-yard line.
East
Kentwood picked up a first down on a Friberg pass to DaJaun Thomas on
3rd and 6 out to the 18 to give themselves some breathing room, but
Grand Ledge held strong and forced a 4th and 3. The Falcons lined up in
a punt formation, but faked it by snapping it directly to Chase Snyder
and Grand Ledge read the fake perfectly. Snyder was stopped for a
4-yard loss and the Comets took over at the Kentwood 21.
Aftter
two runs for Caden Evert that helped the Comets reach the 10, JT
Houghton hit Malek Adams on a slant route for the 10-yard TD. The PAT
was good and gave Grand Ledge a 7-6 lead with 6:24 left in the half.
Kentwood's
next drive ended with a punt after Kyle Friberg was sacked on 3rd and 7
by Robert Willoughby. Grand Ledge tried to get something going before
the end of the half, but Marlon Dorsey's big hit on a pass over the
middle knocked out a possible 20-yard gain in EK territory and forced
Grand Ledge to punt.
Tristan
Waters had a fantastic return to the Grand Ledge 45 with 41 seconds
left in the half, but a holding penalty wiped it out and the score
stood 7-6 as the teams headed into the half.
The
2nd half started much of the same way as the first half with both
defenses setting the tone and dominating play. East Kentwood had a shot
to get on the board with 3:14 left in the 3rd as they attempted a
46-yard field goal by Bryce Lovelace, but it was no good and the score
remained 7-6 Grand Ledge.
Michael
Catching sacked JT Houghton on 3rd down on the following possession,
forcing Grand Ledge to punt again and this time the Falcons put
together a nice scoring drive to start the 4th quarter. Friberg hit
DaJaun Thomas on a screen pass for 9 yards to reach midfield. On the
following play, Michael Ivy busted out a 15-yard run, and then Friberg
rolled out hitting Quantayvious Totten for 18 yards to the Comets 18.
Ivy then ran 9 yards to put the Falcons inside the 10. A few plays
later, Totten finished the drive with a 1-yard TD run. East Kentwood
handed the ball to Andre Welch on a jet sweep to convert the two point
conversion and they took a 14-7 lead with 7:43 left in the game.
Grand
Ledge responded and they did it quickly. On 2nd and 7 from their own
37, JT Houghton hit Cassell Jones on deep slant over the middle and
Jones took it 63 yards for the TD and tied the game up 14-14.
East
Kentwood had a big opportunity on the following drive as Kyle Friberg
kept a play alive by scrambling around the pocket. While on the run, he
fired the ball downfield to a wide open Andre Welch, but the wind
knocked down the pass and it was just short of Welch's diving arms with
3:16 left in the game.
Grand
Ledge, pinned deep in their own territory after the punt from Lovelace,
went three and out. Lalumia punted a ball into the wind that bounced
off a Falcons' player, but Marlon Dorsey quickly fell on the ball at
the Grand Ledge 43 with 2:07 left. Two plays later, Kyle Friberg threw
a jump ball downfield and Tristan Waters made a great catch at the
Grand Ledge 8-yard line.
The
Falcons proceeded to run the clock down to 2.8 seconds to set up a
22-yard field goal attempt by Bryce Lovelace. Lovelace nailed the
22-yarder to give East Kentwood the 17-14 win over Grand Ledge and a
District Championship.
