Grandville
(5-5, 3-2 in OK Red) came out firing on the first drive as Brian
Cappiello ripped of a 27-yard run on the first play of the game down to
the East Kentwood (9-1, 4-1 in OK Red) 38-yard line. Two plays later
the Bulldogs fumbled the snap and East Kentwood hopped on it at the
43-yard line.
The
Falcons then used rushes of 15 and 11 yards from Michael Ivy to reach
the Grandville 26. Next, QB Kyle Friberg hit Adam Racette for 16 yards.
Just two plays later Friberg threw a quick pass out to Tristan Waters
who made a tackler miss as he ran into the end zone for the 6-yard TD
reception. The Falcons took a 6-0 lead after the missed PAT with 7:04
left in the 1st quarter.
Grandville's
offense used a heavy dose of Nolan Meekhof to reach the 47-yard line.
Brian Cappiello took a sweep 27 yards, but a holding call knocked out
the play. A few plays later the Bulldogs faced a 4th and 1, but a false
start made it 4th and 5 forcing Grandville to punt.
The
Falcons put together another TD scoring drive that carried into the 2nd
quarter after being pinned by the punt at their own 8. East Kentwood
went 92 yards after Michael Ivy converted a 3rd and 5 by taking a carry
39 yards to the Grandville 48 yard line. Ivy finished off the drive
with a 7-yard TD run. East Kentwood took a 14-0 lead after converting
the two point conversion on a sweep around the corner to Andre Welch
with 8:46 left in the half.
Grandville
then used runs of 15 and 9 yards by Nolan Meekhof, and an 11 yard run
by Brian Cappiello to reach Falcons' territory. The EK defense held
strong on 4th and 7 as Michael Catching ran down Cappiello on a sweep
stopping him a few yards shy of the 1st down.
East
Kentwood was forced to punt after a three and out, but once again a
Grandville turnover gave the Falcons great field position. Brian
Cappiello fumbled at the 17 yard line and Stephen Keeler bounced on it
for the Falcons setting up great field position for East Kentwood.
Grandville's
defense stopped Ivy for just 1-yard on the first play. A couple of
incomplete passes had East Kentwood settle for a 33-yard field goal
from Bryce Lovelace. Lovelace nailed it giving the Falcons a 17-0 lead
with 1:41 left in the half.
Grandville,
trying to get on the board was stopped again by the tough EK defense as
the clock ran out. East Kentwood took a 17-0 lead into the half.
After
a nice kickoff return from Michael Catching to the Grandville 36,
Michael Ivy left the game with an ankle injury on the second play, but
was able to return. QB Kyle Friberg hit Chase Snyder on a hitch route
and the Bulldogs forced him to fumble as the ball bounced down to the
Grandville 9-yard line and East Kentwood's Kevin Smith fell on it. Two
plays later Michael Catching ran it in for a 9-yard TD to give the
Falcons a 24-0 lead with 9:52 left in the half.
Grandville
responded quickly as Nolan Meekhof busted runs of 41 and 27 yards to
help the Bulldogs reach the EK 11. A few plays later on 4th and 3 from
the 4-yard line, Jake Garbarino capped the drive with a 4-yard TD run.
Cappiello converted the 2-point conversion cutting East Kentwood's lead
to 24-8 with 7:43 left in the 3rd.
The
Bulldogs forced the Falcons to punt on the next drive after a Kyle
Friberg pass downfield into the endzone on 3rd and 17 was just out of
the reach of Kevin Smith. Grandville took over and a 63-yard run from
Nolan Meekhof helped the Bulldogs reach the EK 17. A few plays later
Meekhof was stopped on 4th down and 2 from the EK 9 giving the Falcons
the ball with 1:21 left in the quarter.
The
Falcons then covered 82 yards in two plays with a 23-yard run by
Michael Ivy and a 59-yard run from Michael Catching for a TD. It was a
31-8 lead with 11:18 to go in the 4th.
Brian
Cappiello and Ryan Koorndyk helped Grandville reach the EK 26 with runs
of 27 and 22 yards, but a holding penalty pushed the Bulldogs into a
4th and 15 situation. Koorndyk faked the handoff and rolled right
before firing back across the field to Cappiello on the sideline as he
took it in for the 31-yard TD. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 31-16
after the two point conversion attempt was good.
Grandville
forced a fumble on East Kentwood's next possession, but on 4th and 9
Ryan Koorndyk's pass intended for Ian Hall was too high and incomplete.
East Kentwood took over with 5:15 left.
Then
on 3rd and 10 on their own 45, the Falcons busted out a reverse play to
Kevin Smith who took it 55 yards and put the game out of reach 38-16
with 2:01 left. The Falcons defense held as the clock ran out giving
East Kentwood a 38-16 win.
