Lowell holds off East Grand Rapids for 28-27 playoff win

East Grand Rapids (6-4, 3-2 in OK White) received to begin the game in an OK White rematch with Lowell (9-1, 4-1 in OK White) and scored quickly. Bryce Henkey ripped off a 31-yard run on the Pioneers first play from scrimmage and then went 49 yards on the next play to give East a 6-0 lead with 11:27 left in the half.

A fumble on the following kickoff set up East Grand Rapids at the Lowell 27-yard line. A few plays later QB Mikey Roth completed a nice pass to Mason Banbury for 15 yards as the Pioneers reached the 9-yard line, but Lowell held strong stopping East Grand Rapids on 4th and goal from the 6 as Roth's pass to Jon Olsson in the corner was incomplete.

Lowell responded as QB Ryan Stevens hit Josh Branagan for 10 yards and then after a few runs from Max Dean, Stevens hit Avery Buckius over the middle and he ran 63 yards down to the EGR 2-yard line. Two plays later Max Dean punched it in for a 1-yard TD and a 7-6 Lowell lead with 2:40 left in the quarter.

The score stayed that way into the 2nd quarter until the Pioneers capitalized on a Lowell fumble at their own 41, which was recoverd by EGR's Michael Johnston. Facing 4th and 8, Mikey Roth hit Michael Clifford for 13 yards and a Pioneer 1st down. Three plays later, Roth swung it out to AJ Zawacki who took it 23 yards for the TD to give East Grand Rapids a 13-7 lead with 6:13 left in the half.

Lowell drove right back down the field on their next possession with the help of a 10-yard scramble by QB Ryan Stevens on 3rd and 5. Then, Stevens busted up the middle for 33 yards setting up the Red Arrows at the EGR 20. Lowell pushed the ball down to the 15-yard line, but a Ryan Stevens pass intended for Josh Branagan on 4th and 5 was knocked down by Jon Olsson.

With just under a minute left in the half, Lowell's Nicholas Kloosterman blocked a punt from EGR's Noah Salasky and it rolled before being downed by East Grand Rapids to set up the Red Arrows at the Pioneers 27-yard line. A few plays later, Max Dean ran up the middle for a 9-yard TD and that gave Lowell a 14-13 lead with 20 seconds left in the half.

East Grand Rapids tried a long pass down the sidelines near the end of the half, but Lowell's Gabe Steed picked it off protecting Lowell's lead 14-13 at the half.

Both teams started the 2nd half with three and outs before Lowell found the end zone. After a 37-yard pass from Ryan Stevens to Josh Branagan down to the EGR 11, a roughing the passer call put the ball at the 2-yard line. Two plays later, Max Dean found the end zone again with a 1-yard TD run giving Lowell a 21-13 lead with 3:47 left in the 3rd.

Lowell forced another punt and looked to be threatening again after a 38-yard pass from Stevens to Gabe Steed put the Red Arrows at the 1, but a holding penalty wiped it out and the score held 21-13 into the 4th quarter.

East Grand Rapids got their offense back on track as Mikey Roth completed a 14-yard pass to AJ Zawacki, a 12-yard pass to Jon Olsson, and a 12-yard pass to Drew Hollerbach. Roth then scrambled 14 yards and 2 plays later Michael Johnston capped the drive with a 6-yard TD run making the score 21-19. Roth's pass on the two point conversion was incomplete holding the Red Arrows two point lead.

Lowell converted a 4th and 1 on the following drive, but East Grand Rapids didn't let them advance much further and forced a punt. Mikey Roth then hit Olsson for 9 yards, ran for 5, and then rolled out and hit Michael Clifford for 37 yards. On the next play, Bryce Henkey went 23 yards for the TD, the two point conversion was good as Roth ran it in around the corner and EGR took a 27-21 lead with 3:04 left in the game.

Lowell responded and they did it quickly. On the second play of the drive, Ryan Stevens hit Gabe Steed down the middle and Steed took it 73 yards for a touchdown giving the Red Arrows a 28-27 lead with 2:42 left in the ball game.

East Grand Rapids then faced a 4th and 11 from their own 24. Roth rolled out and was hit as he threw causing the pass to fall incomplete with 1:34 left in the game. Lowell then was able to run the clock out and secure a 28-27 win.
