Week
1 of the 2014 season is in the books, but before we move on, we should
recap some of the events of the weekend. Let's start with some random
observations. It was an interesting couple of days to say the least and
it looks like we are gearing up for quite the season.
Observations:
Grand
Rapids Christian QB Luke Thompson (pictured above) was injured on the
1st play of the 2nd half vs South Christian. He left the game with 114
yards rushing and a TD.
Grandville's
Wing-T offense has some potential. Three Bulldogs ran for over 100
yards and this group has me intrigued.
Tyler
Bradfield loves scoring on returns (3 return TD in 2013). In a 28-10
win on Thursday, the Rockford playmaker returned a fumble 37 yards for
a TD.
13
OK Conference schools scored 40+ points in week 1. Calvin Christian
scored the most (72).
Byron
Center, Northpointe Christian, and Grand Rapids West Catholic were the
only teams to shut out their opponents.
South
Christian RB Geff Plasman showed he's a threat out of the backfield as
a receiver with 7 receptions for 102 yards and a TD vs Grand Rapids
Christian.
5
OK Red teams picked up wins week 1. (Rockford, Hudsonville, East
Kentwood, Grandville, and Grand Haven)
West
Catholic was the only team from the OK Blue to win week 1. Travis
Russell had 3 total touchdowns in a 31-0 win over Muskegon Oakridge.
Lowell
won their season opener and that's not too surprising. The Red Arrows
have won 21 straight season openers.
The
Grand Rapids Catholic Central defense held East Grand Rapids to 69
total yards in the 2nd half. (EGR won on a game-winning field goal as
time expired 17-14)
