Breakdown: Dual-threat QB Mason Opple, Eagles look to build on 2013

By: Sam Russell August 10, 2014

Mason Opple is a true dual-threat QB, able to beat you with his legs or arm at any point in a game. For example, last season Opple threw 4 touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Muskegon Reeths-Puffer in week 2. Then in week 5 against Grandville, Opple ran for almost 200 yards and 5 scores.

If you watch Opple on tape, you can see the kid is a tough runner who isn't afraid to get downhill. Also, it is easy to see he has a big time arm as he showcases his ability to throw the deep ball. These two qualities give Hudsonville the ability to have a dynamic offense this fall.

Opple helped Hudsonville reach the playoffs last season for the first time since 2008. After losing to Rockford on October 4, the Eagles rattled off 5 straight wins on their way to a District Title. A 19-14 win over Rockford gave the Eagles their first Regional berth since 2007.

2 playoff wins in 2013 has Eagle Nation buzzing as we head into the 2014 season. Hudsonville looks to build on last season's success and knock Rockford from the top of the OK Red Standings. The Rams have won 5 straight conference titles, but Opple and the Eagles might have something to say about that this fall.

After being named All-Conference in 2013, the athletic Opple is ready for his senior season, where he will continue to pile up touchdowns on the ground and through the air. One of Opple's main targets from 2013, All-Conference playmaker Curt Doornbos has graduated, but I don't see Mason Opple slowing down in 2014.
