The
2014 regular season is over and it's time for us to hand out our Player
of the Year Awards.
Player
of the Year (Sam's Pick): East Kentwood RB Michael Ivy
The
Numbers: 153 carries 1,501 yards 23 touchdowns, 12 receptions 114 yards
3 TD
Breakdown:
East Kentwood returned to the top of the OK Red for the first time
since 2003 and Michael Ivy was a huge reason behind that. The dominant
running back led an extremely talented Falcons' team to an 8-1 regular
season record and a share of the 2014 conference title. Ivy shined
bright on big stages including a 248-yard 3 touchdown performance vs
Rockford and against Grandville, Ivy ran for 208 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Ivy
gets downhill and uses great vision to extend runs. He does an
incredible job on extending the play by running through tackles to pick
up extra yardage. If the Falcons make a playoff run, a 2,000 yard
season is easily within reach for my 2014 Player of the Year.
Player
of the Year (Casey's Pick): West Catholic QB Travis Russell
The
Numbers: 92/150 for 1,364 yards 18 touchdowns, 139 carries for 803
yards 14 TD
Breakdown:
Russell was at the helm of a dominant spread offense that averaged over
40 points per game leading West Catholic to an undefeated regular
season. Russell racked up 32 total touchdowns and had three 5 touchdown
games on the season. The dual threat QB is one of the most dangerous
players in the area and proved he is one of the elite quarterbacks in
West Michigan.
After
an injury to Lasavian Majewski, Russell was counted on to help keep the
run game going and he delivered surpassing his 2013 totals of 687 yards
rushing and 10 touchdowns in just 9 games so far this season compared
to 14 last year. He has improved his touchdown to interception ratio as
well 18-5 in 2014 compared to 22-13 last season. Each week, the Falcons
look more dangerous and my 2014 Player of the Year is leading the
charge.
