2014 Season Preview: A look at the South Christian Defense
By: WM Football Network Staff August 15, 2014

Everyone knows all about South Christian's high-powered offense, but let's not forget about the strong playmaking defense they had in 2013. As we head into the 2014 season, the Sailors will have some players to replace on the defensive side of the ball, but they also return some key pieces that helped them make a run to the 2013 State Final.

Key players to replace (LB/DL):

Todd Postma (DE), Taylor Meyering (LB), and David Boomsma (LB) were All-Conference players over the course of their careers and proven winners. Boomsma was not only a great player (led the team in tackles in 2013 with 84.5), but also a great leader. Postma and Meyering were fantastic run-stoppers who will be missed this season.

Mitchell Quakkelaar is an absolute monster at defensive end. One of the strongest guys on the team and capable of shedding just about any block, Quakkelaar was an All-Conference performer in 2013 and should put up big numbers again this season. Check out a couple other players from last season who were key on the Sailor defense:

Kevin Bouwman (60.5 tackles) and Sam Heyboer (51 tackles)

The secondary:

The Sailors had 20 interceptions last season as their aggressive defensive backs stepped up at crucial times in games to make big plays in the secondary. Steve Springvloed, Jake Walters, and Kyle Haan have graduated and their shoes will be tough to fill in 2014. Springvloed and Haan did a little bit of everything in 2013 whether it was playing both ways or even kicking and punting. Walters and Haan combined for 5 interceptions during their senior campaign making it tough for teams in West Michigan to throw vs the Sailors.

Solid players have graduated, but there is some good news, Eric VanVoorst (10 INT) is back and once again will be a nightmare for quarterbacks in the OK Gold. All-State in 2013, VanVoorst will be one of the leaders of the Sailor defense in 2014.

Coach Tamminga is geting after this group and making sure they are tough heading into 2014. We like what we see talent wise on the defensive side of the ball, but it's up to the Sailors to put it all together.
