The
Fighting Scots used Earth, Wind, and Fire to take down the Sailors.
It’s
September, so it would be rude not to mention Earth, Wind, and Fire and
not mention their hit song. It would also be rude not to give
a ton of credit to the Caledonia Fighting Scots offensive line that
continued to open up holes for their very own Earth (Eddie Kelly), Wind
(Kobe Wilson) and Fire (Jalen Burton) to run through and past the
Sailors of South Christian.
After a
1 hour and 5 minute rain delay the much-anticipated week 2 match-up
between host South Christian (0-2) and visiting Caledonia (2-0) got
kicked off. South Christian was looking to recoup after last
weeks tough loss to area powerhouse Grand Rapids Christian and looked
to be on their way of doing that after a 5-yard TD rush by Jon Wassink
put them 7-0 at the 7:06 mark in
the 1st quarter,
a lead that stood for the remainder of the quarter thanks to a handful
of penalties that took back a couple of Caledonia touchdowns.
The
second quarter turned into a track meet in favor of the Fighting
Scots. Eddie Kelly (Earth) was able to get spinning as he
busted through for a 65-yard TD rush to even things up at 7 a piece
just 33 seconds into the 2nd quarter
to cap a 99 yard drive after Wassink had a punt downed at the 1 yard
line. Following a huge 4th and 1
stop to a Sailors drive, Kobe Wilson (Wind) was able to put his shifty
moves to work as he blew by the defense for a 78-yard TD rush to put
Caledonia up 14-7. 90 seconds later Jon Wassink hit his main
targetEric VanVoorst for a
70-yard strike to even things up 14-14. The Fighting Scots
answered the bell and took a 20-14 lead going into halftime after
Wilson hit a wide-open Bryce Christian for 6 points with just 7 seconds
remaining in the half. The Scots missed the PAT.
Just 46
seconds into the 2nd half
Eddie Kelly got going again as he scampered 61 yards for a touchdown
and got the ball again on the 2-point conversion which was successful
to put the Scots up 28-14. Then came Jalen Burton (Fire) who
put his track shows on as well for a 63-yard TD run of his
own. The Sailors and Wassink however were not going
away. 58 seconds later, Wassink took off for a 69-yard TD
rush of his own to bring the score to 35-21 which stood for the
remaining 3:16 of the
quarter.
The 4th quarter
was all Scots as they continued their track meet and the Sailors
suffered a tough loss in an injury to standout receiver Eric VanVoorst
who Wassink could have used as the Sailors played catch-up.
In the 4th quarter
the Scots had rushing touchdowns by Kobe Wilson (5-yards) and Eddie
Kelly (13-yards).
Next
week the victorious Scots travel to Forrest Hills Central with their
2-0 record. South Christian will pay a visit to Unity
Christian as they look for their first victory. Although 0-2,
I don’t think anyone doubts that this team has what it takes to make a
state title run, they just ran into two teams in higher divisions that
are on their way to state title runs themselves.
