South
Christian (7-2, 5-0 in OK Gold), winners of six straight, came out
firing tonight as they scored on their first three drives.
Geff Plasman scored on the second play of the game on a
62-yard touchdown run. On South’s second possession,
Jon Wassink hit Brandon VanSolkema for a 34-yard touchdown pass to make
the score 14-0. After a Wayland (0-9, 0-5 in OK Gold) punt,
South Christian would drive down the field and score on a Plasman
6-yard touchdown run. The point after would fail and South
Christian would lead 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After
the teams traded a few possessions, South Christian would drive down
the field and score on 2-yard touchdown run by Nate Honderd making the
score 27-0 Sailors.
Wayland
would get going offensively on its next possession and score on a
20-yard touchdown pass from Austin Burns to Eric Villarreal with 50
seconds left in the first half. Wayland went for two, but the
conversion failed leaving the score at 27-6.
Wayland
would surprise the Sailors with an onside kick and they recovered
giving them a chance to score with 50 seconds left in first
half. Wayland would capitalize and with 7 seconds left in the
half, a 31-yard touchdown pass to Mason Evers made it 27-12 at the
break.
Wayland
would receive the ball to start the 3rd quarter and the Wildcats found the end
zone on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Burns to Taylor Stancell. Wayland once again went for two, but the
conversion failed leaving the score at 27-18.
After
an unsuccessful onside attempt, South Christian worked quickly scoring
on their second play as Wassink would hit Ryan Veenstra on a 35-yard
touchdown pass making the score 34-18.
South
Christian would intercept a pass on the next Wayland possession and
Plasman would score three plays later on a 22-yard touchdown run making
the score 40-18.
Wayland
added an 8-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Swainston early in the
4th quarter bringing the score to 40-24 after another failed
2-point conversion.
Once
again, South Christian would score quickly, this time on five plays as
Plasman would score from 3 yards out. After a Wayland punt,
sophomore Eric Dykstra would throw his first varsity touchdown pass for
the Sailors as he hit VanSolkema on a 28-yard touchdown pass making the
score 54-24.
Wayland
would score once more on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Burns to Evers
and the score stood at 54-30 until the final horn.
The
Sailors have won 7-straight games and are the 2014 OK Gold Champions.
