It
was a beautiful night for Homecoming at East Grand Rapids and a perfect
Friday night for a football game.
After
each team traded punts throughout the 1st quarter, Grandville struck
first in the 2nd after a 3-yard TD run by Nolan Meekhof with 9:17 left
in the half. The Bulldogs started the drive on their own 4-yard line
and proceeded to go 96 yards for the TD. QB Ryan Koorndyk hit Ben
Sinclair on a 20-yard pass to give Grandville some breathing room and
then Sinclair ripped off a 51-yard run down to the EGR 14. Four plays
later Meekhof busted into the endzone and the Bulldogs added a 2-point
conversion to make it 8-0.
The
Pioneers struck back with a 15-play, 68-yard TD drive capped by a QB
sneak from Mikey Roth. Running back Matt Solberg racked up 34-yards
rushing on the drive and Roth completed a 12-yard pass off of
play-action to Casey Horjus that pushed EGR to the Grandville 14.
Michael Johnston then bruised his way down to the 2 and Roth finished
the drive making it 8-6 after a failed 2 point conversion.
Grandville
wasn't going to settle heading into the half and once again Ben
Sinclair broke one for six, this time a 37-yard TD with 24 seconds left
in the half giving the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead.
Then,
with 7 seconds left East Grand Rapids whipped out a trick play. Mikey
Roth swung it out to Gourney Sloan in the backfield, who then fired it
downfield to Mason Banbury who took it to the house for a 57 yard TD.
Roth ran in the 2 point conversion to tie it 14-14 at the half.
Right
out of the gate in the 2nd half the Pioneers used big plays to build a
three touchdown lead. On the first play of the 3rd quarter Mike
Johnston ran for 19 yards and then Matt Solberg broke free for a 40
yard TD giving EGR a 21-14 lead.
After
forcing Grandville to punt, Mike Johnston ran up the gut for 35 yards
and on the next play Mikey Roth ran it in from 6 yards out building the
Pioneers lead to 28-14. The Pioneers ran a play-action bootleg, but a
lane to the endzone was wide open for Roth to cruise in for six.
Johnston
then picked off Grandville's Ryan Koorndyk and returned it 21 yards for
the TD on the first play of the next possession making the score 34-14.
Johnston was fantastic on the night with 11 tackles, the pick six, and
72 yards rushing.
Grandville
didn't panic and even after a holding penalty knocked out a 75 yard run
by Nolan Meekhof, the Bulldogs drove 88 yards, taking up most of the
3rd quarter, and eventually punched it in with a 2-yard TD from Meekhof
with 9:59 left in the 4th quarter making it 34-22 after a converted
2-point attempt.
On
the next possession, EGR fumbled on a pitch play near midfield and
Grandville capitalized. Sinclair ripped off a 34-yard run on the next
play and a few plays later reached the endzone on a 9-yard TD making it
34-28 with 4:01 left.
The
Pioneers then went to Solberg who ran for 18 yards on 2nd and 5 with
3:15 left to seal the deal for East Grand Rapids. The Pioneers were
able to run out the clock and win it 34-28.
