Grand
Rapids Christian's defense lived up to the hype all night long as they
got after South Christian QB Jon Wassink in a 28-14 win.
On
their very first possession, South Christian drove down to Grand Rapids
Christian's 27-yard line, but Wassink was denied a 1st by Jack Bates on
4th and short.
Grand
Rapids Christian fumbled on their next possession, South Christian went
3 and out, and then Grand Rapids Christian got things going on the
ground. They racked up 43 yards on the ground and capped the drive with
a 3-yard TD run by Davaunte Dickens with 3:42 left in the 1st.
On
the very next possession Sailors QB Jon Wassink was picked off by
Patrick Hall, who then returned it to the Sailors' 25-yard line.
South
Christian's defense held strong with their backs against the wall and
were able to block a 32-yard field goal attempt by Dillion Weldy
keeping the score at 7-0.
In
the 2nd quarter, Eagles QB Luke Thompson had a 49-yard run into
Sailors' territory and later reached the endzone with a 29-yard run for
a TD putting Grand Rapids Christian up 14-0 with 7:37 left in the 2nd.
The
Grand Rapids Christian defense remained strong throughout the rest of
the 2nd quarter. Wassink was getting pressured quickly, impacting the
timing of the offense.
Noah
Nedd forced Wassink to fumble late in the 2nd quarter and Christian
High was able to capitalize with a 24-yard TD run by Dickens.
The
2nd half was a completely different story as South Christian fought
back, cutting a 21-0 halftime lead to 21-14 after Wassink hit Jeff
Plasman on a screen pass with 8:50 left in the 3rd that Plasman took
22-yards for a TD.
Wassink
then hit Ryan Veenstra for a 51-yard TD in the 4th quarter with 4:35
left to make it 21-14.
Patrick
Hall took over at QB for Grand Rapids Christian after Luke Thompson was
injured on the 1st play of the 2nd half. Hall did a great job of
managing the offense down the stretch and made the throw of the night
hitting Deleon Brown for 50 yards down the sideline with under 2
minutes to go. Brown was brought down at Sailors' 7-yard line. Then,
with 19 seconds left Patrick Hall hit Alex Bos on 4th and goal for a
2-yard TD to seal the deal.

QB
Luke Thompson was injured and left the game on the 1st play of the 2nd
half. Thompson had 114 yards rushing and a TD in the 1st half.
Patrick
Hall took over and was solid for the Eagles. Hall was 7-13 for 85 yards
and a TD (to Alex Bos with 19 seconds left), he also added 38 yards on
the ground.
Davaunte
Dickens had 2 rushing touchdowns, Jack Bates had 7 tackles (2 TFL),
Noah Nedd had a sack and a forced fumble.
Deleon
Brown had 4 receptions for 72 yards including the 50-yarder to set up
Christian High's final TD late in the 4th.
The
Eagles' defense forced 4 turnovers (3 fumbles and an interception)
South
Christian Notes:
Jon
Wassink was 16-28 for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Geff
Plasman had 102 yards receiving and a TD, while Ryan Veenstra had 50
yards receiving and a TD.
The
South Christian defense was strong in the 2nd half lead by Kevin
Bouwman (7 tackles), Jake Wierenga (6.5 tackles), and Sam Heyboer (5.5
tackles, 1.5 TFL)
Bouwman,
John Masselink, and Dylan Brink each had an interception.
